Aura-Soma

“You are the colours you choose and these reflect our beings needs” – Vicky Wall

Aura-Soma may be described as a method of chromotherapy but it also incorporates aspects of certain forms of divination such as the I Ching, tarot and the Kabbalah. Concepts from Jungian psychology also relate to the Aura-Soma colour system.

Aura-Soma was devised by British pharmacist and chiropodist, Vicky Wall in 1983. At that time, she was 66 years old and blind, but her inspiration for a colour-care system has grown since then and is now spread around the world.

The underlying idea of Aura-Soma is that colour is a unifying universal language. Colour is a way that connections can be made and each individual colour relates to a different aspect of life. Practitioners give significance and psychological connotations to the colour combinations that a person chooses.

In traditional systems, such as the Chakras, colour is related to different parts of the body, with connections to emotional, mental and spiritual states, in addition to the physical. With its name signifying light (aura) and body (soma), the system’s purpose is to enliven our bodies with light.

In the Aura-Soma system, colour combinations are represented by two-tone bottles known as equilibrium bottles. The bottles consist of two colours of organic oil and water – usually two different colours but some bottles are monotone – with each bottle representing symbolic, spiritual, mental, emotional and physical concepts as defined by its two colours.

How do you ‘Aura-Soma’?

The standard divination process uses the equilibrium bottles. From the full selection, we pick four bottles one after another and the practitioner will then interpret the meaning of the selections. It is important to note the order in which they are chosen because:

  • The first bottle represents the self, or describes our current state
  • The second represents hidden gifts as well as greatest obstacles
  • The third represents present energy giving a way to overcome obstacles
  • The fourth represents the energy we draw towards us; the future we are trying to create for ourselves though overcoming the obstacles.

Following the election process, we will pick one of the four bottles to use by shaking the bottle and applying the blend of the oil and water to the parts of their body (Chakras) corresponding to the colours of the bottle.

This process is an instinctive one similar to the Lüscher colour test, Rorschach inkblot test and other psychological methods of accessing the unconscious mind – as distinct from the conscious mind. However, Aura-Soma cannot be described as a science or a branch of psychology.
