I always used to say that ‘colouring-in’ would be my occupation of choice. Actually, I still say it!

The process of shading and colouring is such a meditative process. The product is beautifully satisfying. And sometimes beautiful.

Anyway, the trend for colouring books grows. For grown-ups as well as the littlies, pencils and crayons and colouring books are the new way to connect with creativity. And for mindfulness, meditation, relaxation as well. This article is about the benefits of adult colouring books for stress relief. I collected a few pattern books based on various cultures and countries at airports and in art gallery shops a year or so ago before they became such a trend. (Where did I put those things??)

Here’s a story from BBC magazine: ‘What makes a great adult colouring book?’

So, what’s the attraction?

Apart from the ‘just for fun’ factor, there is real benefit – for health & wellbeing – from taking out the pencils and doing some colouring.

Benefits of colouring. It can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

Because colouring helps the fear centre of the brain (the amygdala) to relax, it allows a meditative state. Thoughts and a restless mind are calmed.

  • Improve sleep

By not using electronics /screens before bedtime and colouring instead, you can reduce exposure to blue light. Blue light reduces levels of the sleep hormone, melatonin, but this electronic-free activity won’t.

  • Improve focus

Colouring requires you to focus, but not in a stressful way. It lets you put worries to one side and be in the moment, bringing focus and clarity.
